5 Naxals killed in Dantewada encounter
Five Naxals were killed while two armed personnel have been injured in an encounter with security forces in the worst Maoist violence-hit Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh today.

Officials said the encounter took place early today in the Burgam village of the said district when a joint squad of CRPF and District Reserve Group (DRG) of state police was out for operations.

"The encounter is still on. Five Naxals has been killed and their bodies are with the forces. An AK series assault rifle has also been recovered," a senior officer said.

Two DRG men have been injured and have now been evacuated, he added.

The officer said the exact details of the operation will take time to emerge as the encounter spot is deep inside jungle area and cellular phone and wireless connectivity is extremely poor.

Reinforcement teams have been rushed in, the officer said.

The 111 battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is leading the operation, they said.

"The skirmish took place at around 2 PM between a team of state police's District Reserve Group (DRG) and ultras in the jungles of Burgum village under Aranpur police station limits," Inspector General of Police (in-charge) Bastar Range Sundarraj P told PTI.

"Bodies of five rebels belonging to Malangir Area Committee of Maoists were recovered from the spot while search was still on in the area," said the IG.

DRG commandos had launched an anti-Maoist operation based on specific inputs, Sundarraj added.

When the security forces were cordoning off jungles of Burgum, they came across a group of Naxals leading to the gun-battle, he added.

During the search, five bodies of rebels and a few weapons, including one AK-47 rifle, were recovered, he said.

Besides, two Sub Inspector (SI) rank officials Sangram Singh and Domendra Patre, belonging to DRG, sustained injuries in the face-off, the IG said.

One of the injured personnel has been shifted to a local hospital while another is being shifted, he said adding "they were said to be out of danger".

Of the killed Naxals, a woman cadre was identified as Palle, who was active as secretary of Malangir Area Committee and member of Darbha Divisional Committee of Maoists, he said.

The identity of other killed ultras was being ascertained, he added.
